Gothic mirrors & wall decor

A gothic mirror or a single sculptural wall piece can give an ordinary room a focal point. The useful question is what the wall needs: reflected light, a strong shape, a personal photograph or a small detail beside a doorway. Choose that purpose before choosing the most elaborate frame.

What would you like to change?

To make a focal point

An ornate or arched mirror provides a strong outline. Compare its full outer dimensions with the furniture beneath it, including the frame.

To display something personal

A picture frame lets a photograph, print or postcard carry the story. Check the actual image aperture and whether a mount is included.

To add a smaller detail

A wall plaque can work in a narrow space that cannot take a large frame. Check its depth as well as its height and width.

A closer look before you choose

Make the details work for you.

Measure the whole frame

An ornate border can take up much of a mirror's overall width. Compare the outer dimensions with the usable glass area if you want it for getting ready, rather than decoration alone. For a picture frame, distinguish the overall frame size from the photograph size and any smaller opening created by a mount.

Before buying, cut a paper rectangle to the listed dimensions and hold it in position. Look from the doorway and from the seat you use most often. This makes it easier to spot a frame that is too slight above a wide cabinet, or a plaque that projects into a busy passage.

Choose what the mirror will reflect

A mirror repeats what is opposite it. Try the position before committing: an attractive window, a lamp or a quiet part of the room may be more useful to reflect than storage you would prefer not to notice. A round black frame can soften a room of straight edges; an ornate arch can introduce a more theatrical vertical line.

There is no need to make every wall equally busy. Let the largest piece have some clear space around it, then use smaller frames where they can be seen at close range. A limited palette can connect a mixture of old and new frames without making them identical.

Plan the fixing before the purchase

Check the weight, hanging orientation and supplied fittings. The right fixing depends on both the object and the wall, so follow the manufacturer's guidance and get suitable advice when needed. A decorative frame is not automatically safe to lean on a narrow shelf. Renters should check what changes are permitted before choosing a wall-mounted piece.

Our ornate mirror buying notes explain the visual choices, while modern gothic ideas for a small hallway place a mirror within a working entrance. Begin with one wall and let the rest of the room respond to it.

A little more guidance.

Can I mix ornate and simple frames?

Yes. Repeat a colour, finish or proportion so the pieces have something in common. A simpler frame can give an elaborate mirror room to stand out.

What if I cannot make holes in the wall?

Look at a frame explicitly designed to stand on furniture, with a stable surface and enough depth. Check your agreement and the product instructions before using adhesive or other hanging systems.
