One corner, two moods

An 80 cm sideboard, from day to dusk

Choose the light.

In daylight, the two holder heights make a silhouette. Leave the right-hand end of the surface clear.

After dark, switch on the same two flameless candles. The low bowl catches a little light without hiding either glow.

Start with one 80 × 32 cm sideboard, two flameless candles and a shallow bowl. Set the taller holder towards the left, the shorter one just off centre, and the bowl to their right. Leave the far end empty. The same arrangement has a different shape in daylight and after dark.

Lay out the corner in daylight

For this example, use a 24 cm holder and a 16 cm holder. Those measurements are for the holders alone. Place them on the surface before adding the LED candles so you can see how the stems line up. From the doorway, move the shorter holder until both outlines are visible. A low bowl around 6 cm high gives the eye a third level without hiding either light.

Switch on one light at a time

At dusk, switch on the taller LED candle first. Look at the wall behind it, then add the lower light. Against pale plaster the stems show clearly. Against dark paint a pool of light on the bowl may do more for the arrangement than adding another holder. Try it once with the room lamp on: this is a corner you should still enjoy while the rest of the room is in use.

Adapt the idea for a shelf or a smaller surface

On a narrow shelf, start with one flameless candle and the bowl. Check the whole base sits flat with space around it. Use an LED candle in an enclosed lantern or near books and curtains. If you choose a real candle elsewhere, follow the candle and holder makers’ instructions, keep it clear of anything that can catch fire, and put it out whenever you leave the room.
